Lady Vikes take tournament title

A full day of softball at the Lucy Young Invitational saw Warren Central, Vicksburg and St. Aloysius play three games apiece and make some progress after last weekend’s rain disrupted any early season momentum.

Warren Cental won all three of its games to win the four-team round robin, but Vicksburg may have made the most progress by playing the Lady Vikes tough in a 5-1 loss, then pulling out a 2-1 win over St. Aloysius in Saturday’s final game at Lucy Young Field.

Missy Gators catcher Blake DeRossette was happy with the win over their Bazinsky Park neighbors.

“I think we played good today. We did exactly what the coaches told us. Even though Warren Central beat us, we battled them for all seven innings,” DeRossette said.

While most of the tournament games lasted between three and five innings because of an 80-minute time limit, Vicksburg and Warren Central played the full seven in a fast-moving contest.

The Lady Vikes (5-2) got a complete game from pitcher Chelsea Worley to gain the win. Vicksburg (3-2) managed to get six hits, but its only run came in the seventh inning when Heather Middleton scored on an errant throw to third base.

WC extended a 1-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Katie Busby plated one run on a fielder’s choice, while Alexis Patterson’s groundout got another in. Chasity Hearn capped the rally with a triple to score Busby for a 5-0 lead.

“We played pretty solid defense and we hit the ball when we needed to,” WC coach Dana McGivney said.

Vicksburg got two hits from Kortni Newman and a double from Sydney Bufkin.

The Missy Gators bounced back from the WC loss with a 2-1 win over St. Al (2-4). The Lady Flashes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Perry Gillis singled home Grace Franco.

St. Al was close to keeping its lead, but a passed ball on a third strike to DeRossette allowed her to reach base. DeRossette stole second and then came home when a throw from Franco went past the bag at third base. Torey Daniels followed with a hit to shallow right. A groundball off Bufkin’s bat went through the legs of the shortstop and into left-center to score Daniels for a 2-1 lead.

Faith Thomas then struck out three over the final two innings to nail down her second win of the day. She struck out five for the game while scattering six hits. Earlier, Thomas allowed one hit over three innings in an 8-0 win over Greenville-St. Joe.

St. Al coach Gene Rogillio was disappointed his team let another game get away.

“We didn’t play as well as we could,” Rogillio said. “It’s the same thing, too many errors. We make one error on the passed ball and then created two more after that. At least we started to get some wood on the ball in the third game, so that was a bright spot.”

Mallory McGuffee and Gillis each had two hits for St. Al.

Daniels had two hits and scored a run to pace Vicksburg.

The Lady Vikes built a 12-0 lead after two innings and then subbed in the junior varsity to wrap up their third win of the day.

Lawren Boolos had a two-run double to key an eight-run first inning. Lexie Burleigh, Kendall Parker and Katie Busby also had RBI hits in the rally. Boolos had another hit and scored a run in the second inning.

Alexis Patterson drove in two runs, while Busby and Parker each had two hits.

Megan McCullough pitched the first three innings to grab the win. She struck out six and allowed just two hits.

In the tournament opener, McGuffee hit a solo home run but the Lady Vikes scored six runs over the first three innings to rally back.

Worley got the win for WC while Cameron Curtis took the loss for St. Al.
