Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart on Monday afternoon said a possible sighting of one of two men wanted in connection with the kidnapping and slaying of an Ohio man in Vicksburg did not check out.

On Monday morning, a motorist said a man fitting the description of one of the men was seen on Mission 66 driving a car with Tennessee tags.

Also on Monday afternoon, Jackson, Tenn., police were searching for a parks and recreation department pickup reported stolen around 1:30 p.m. at a Jackson park.

Madison County (Tenn.) Sheriff David Woolfork told the Jackson Sun that a city employee who had been using the truck positively identified Darian “Drake” Pierce and Ricky Wedgeworth through mugshots.

The Sun reported the white Ford Ranger extended cab pickup had parks and recreation decals on the doors and a No. 37 on the front and rear of the truck.

Wedgeworth, 36, and Pierce, 33, had last been seen Tuesday night, the day after they are believed to have killed David Cupps, 53, after carjacking and kidnapping him a week ago today from a parking lot on Pemberton Square Boulevard.

His body was found Wednesday outside a Bessemer, Ala., motel. An autopsy showed he had been beaten and strangled.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has offered $1,000 and Madison County (Tenn.) Crime stoppers another $1,000 for information leading to the arrests of Wedgeworth and Pierce.

As the nationwide hunt continued, Stewart said Vicksburg investigators are still trying to piece together the escapees’ steps while in Vicksburg, apparently for four days and three nights.

Trusties are allowed to maintain bank accounts, he said, and Wedgeworth and Pierce probably had access to cash that authorities did not track, Stewart said.

“We don’t know how much money they left with,” he said.

Police have obtained video footage from surveillance cameras at casinos and other businesses here and are examining it for possible sightings of Wedgeworth and Piece, he said.
