Services for Mattie Pearl Allen will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vicksburg City Auditorium. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home with family present from 6 until 7.
Mrs. Allen died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at River Region Medical Center. She was 78.
She was born in Vicksburg to Joseph and Catherine Jones. She graduated from Cary High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Alcorn A&M College. She received a master’s degree and specialist in education from Jackson State University.
She taught for 31 years in the Vicksburg schools.
With her husband, she served as a pastor at Wayside Apostolic Church of Deliverance in Vicksburg. She was president of Wayside Churches of Deliverance Inc. and founded Wayside International Ministries.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jacqueline Adams; and two sons, Sylvester Adams Jr. and Anthony Adams.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Bishop Frank Allen; two daughters, Brenda Walker and Marlene Smith, both of Vicksburg; one son, Alphelus Allen of Vicksburg; four sisters, Riva Okonkwo and Iris Walls, both of Houston, Texas, Rosalie Conner of Vicksburg and Marjorie Fantroy of San Antonio, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
