A Moselle, Miss., man who was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 20 early Sunday morning as he attempted to get help to repair his car was in critical condition this morning in a Jackson hospital.

Dudley Shane Scrimpshire, 42, was taken to River Region Medical Center after he was struck on Interstate 20 westbound near the Bovina exit, said Mississippi Department of Public Safety Communications Director John Kalahar.

Scrimpshire was then airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson.

Authorities believe Scrimpshire, whose car, with the hood up, was on the shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-20 near the exit, was walking on the highway when he was struck by a vehicle, Kalahar said. He was found injured around 6 a.m.

Kalahar said authorities are working to uncover a description of the vehicle that struck Scrimpshire and are treating the investigation as a hit-and-run.

Scrimpshire’s car, a Mitsubishi, had a Tate County license plate.

Kalahar said Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is leading the investigation and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol assisted.
