Gators fall short vs. Jags

Vicksburg did something no other team has done against Madison Central this season.

The Gators put seven runs on the top-ranked Jaguars, all in the first inning. But Madison Central had enough pitching depth and big bats to rally to beat Vicksburg 12-7 Saturday afternoon at Bazinsky Field.

Madison Central, ranked No. 21 in the nation by Max Preps, remains unbeaten at 15-0. The seven runs tallied by the Gators were the most the Jaguars have given up this season.

Jaguar starter Drew Broyles did not make it out of the first inning and reliever Sean Surles couldn’t get out of the third. Madison Central coach Gregg Perry had to go to one of his top pitchers, Brock Hunt, to subdue the Gator bats.

“They put a seven spot on us and that’s more than anyone has scored against us,” Perry said. “They did a good job. I had to find a pitcher who could win for us. We had seven innings, so I felt we could come back.”

The Jaguars did in the fourth inning, but the Gators were one strike away from keeping the lead.

Freshman pitcher Jekori Reed had Alabama committment Spencer Turnbull in an 0-2 hole with two on and two outs in the fourth inning and the Gators leading 7-4. Reed lost the handle on a curveball and hit Turnbull to load the bases.

Next batter Zach Irwin made the Gators pay. The left-handed hitter went opposite field on a 2-2 Reed pitch for a grand slam, just over the 364-foot sign in left-center. The blast turned a three-run deficit into an 8-7 lead.

Taylor Brocato had a home run and pitched four innings to grab the win. The Gators (8-8) scored nine runs in the third inning to take a 15-2 lead.

Lamar Anthony had three hits, scored two runs and had two RBI.
