Fourteen auto burglaries in and near the Openwood and Dogwood Lakes subdivisions and off Culkin Road have been reported to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office since Sunday afternoon, Sheriff Martin Pace said today.
Items reported stolen included loaded handguns, computers, wallets and cash, Pace said.
“The common denominator is all of these were believed to have occurred in the late night to early morning hours and every one of them was to an unlocked vehicle,” said the sheriff.
Five reports were taken today on Dogwood Lake Drive and Chadwick Place, off Tiffintown Road east of Bovina, the sheriff said.
One resident said deputies’ cars dotted driveways along Dogwood Lake this morning as reports were taken.
Items reported missing included an iPod touch, a laptop computer, an MP3 player and a purse containing a small amount of cash and a checkbook, Pace said. Specific reports were still being filed.
Pace said deputies took reports of seven auto burglaries in the Openwood area over several hours Monday morning, following two reports on Sunday.
“My plea to the public is lock your vehicle and do not leave items of value, especially not a firearm, inside the vehicle,” Pace said. “Many times, with the newer cars equipped with automatic alarms, the thieves will target unlocked vehicles and will choose not to force entry so as not to set off an alarm.”
Reported Sunday:
• In the 200 block of Fairways Drive — one pair of sunglasses.
• In the 300 block of Newit Vick Drive — one PlayStation 3 game system and several PS3 games.
Reported Monday:
• In the 100 block of Brookwood Drive — one ice chest (empty).
• In the 200 block of Brookwood Drive — one satellite radio.
• In the 100 block of Emerald Way — a CD case with CDs and several dollars in change.
• In the 100 block of Emerald Way — a .380-caliber loaded handgun.
• Beauregard Drive — a .45-caliber loaded handgun, a purse containing $30 and a computer hard drive.
• In the 700 block of Lake Forest Drive — two golf clubs and a pair of sunglasses.
• In the 700 block of Lake Forest Drive — cash, believed to be less than $100.
Pace said deputies do have leads in the cases, but issued a reminder for residents to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
