Barrier installed at home on city’s demolition list

A partial fence and gate installed to block the driveway to a home on the city’s demolition list does not apply to city inspectors, officials said Wednesday.

Abraham L. Fowler, owner of the antebellum-like home at 1500 East Ave., installed about 20 yards of wooden fencing to block entry onto to the property’s driveway despite meeting Tuesday with city officials to resolve various property violations.

“If it’s on the city’s demolition list, we should be able to come in and inspect it,” said Michael Mayfield, alderman of the North Ward who met with Fowler following a hearing March 21 on the property.

City attorney Lee Davis Thames Jr. agreed.

“If we see a violation, by law, we have a duty and a right to check on it,” he said. However, he declined to comment on Fowler’s property specifically, saying, “I’m hoping to come to an amicable solution.”

Fowler’s attorney, Marcie Southerland, also declined comment on the ongoing property dispute, saying only, “Mr. Fowler does not want people trespassing on his property.”

About the fence, Mayfield said, “To me, it made the property much worse. And I think he’s obstructing the ingress and egress.”

Mayfield said Fowler has not complied with many of the city’s requests, including cutting grass around the road’s right-of-way and around the property.

Fowler’s property, which was built on about four acres in 1968 by his parents, has been on the city’s demolition list for ttwo years and has been cited for numerous aesthetic violations.

Fowler and his attorney met with the Board of Mayor and Aldermen March 21 to request that the property be taken off the demolition list and were granted a stay while both parties talked about possible solutions. Fowler is expected to approach the board again at Monday’s city board meeting to make the same request.

Fowler, who said he lives at the property part-time, also lives and works in Monroe, La.
