Error helps Southern Miss top Rebels in the 10th

One man’s luck is another’s misfortune, a lesson Ole Miss learned the hard way Wednesday night.

Adam Doleac’s short fly ball to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning was dropped by Ole Miss’ Tanner Mathis, allowing pinch runner Travis Creel to score the winning run from first as Southern Miss pulled out a 4-3 victory.

Kameron Brunty, Isaac Rodriguez and Justin Dilliberto had two hits apiece for Southern Miss (19-5), but it was a routine fly ball that turned into the decisive play.

Rodriguez singled with two outs and was replaced on first base by Creel. Doleac followed with his fly ball to left that Mathis misplayed. Creel zipped around the bases with the winning run as Southern Miss snapped a two-game losing streak to its in-state rival.

In the top of the 10th, Ole Miss had runners thrown out at third and at home to thwart a rally. Mathis led off with a single and was thrown out at third on a fielder’s choice. Later in the inning, Blake Newalu was gunned down at home while trying to score on single to right field by Matt Smith.

“It was a good college ballgame, although it’s disappointing to not get the win,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “We had opportunities to get the lead back in the top of the 10th, but they made the plays. We have to execute better and make the play when we get the opportunity.”

Brunty hit a solo homer in the fifth inning for Southern Miss, and Rodriguez and Tyler Koelling each had an RBI single. Preston Overbey went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Ole Miss (18-8), while Newalu and Alex Yarbrough had two hits apiece.

Freshman Boomer Scarborough allowed six hits and three runs in 7 2/3 innings in a solid debut for the Golden Eagles. He didn’t allow a run after the third inning, but ended up with a no-decision. Collin Cargill (2-1) pitched the last 1 1/3 innings to get the win.

Blair Wright (0-1), the fifth of six Ole Miss pitchers, took the loss. Brett Huber relieved Wright after Rodriguez’s single in the 10th and was on the mound when the winning run scored.
