With one strong Sunday performance, LSU shook off two weeks of doubt and frustration.
Richton native JaCoby Jones and Mikie Mahtook had two hits and two RBIs apiece, and the Tigers scored all of their runs in the first four innings on the way to an 8-2 victory over Ole Miss in the series finale in Baton Rouge.
LSU (20-8, 3-6) won its first Southeastern Conference series of the season by taking two of three from the Rebels (19-10, 4-5). LSU had also lost six of its previous eight games overall entering the series.
Matt Smith went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for Ole Miss, but the Rebels were undone by two errors in the early going. One throwing error helped load the bases in the bottom of the first inning, then another allowed a run to score. Mahtook scored on a ground out to give LSU a 3-0 lead.
Alex Edward added a solo homer in the second inning to make it 4-0, and two more in the third on an RBI triple by Mahtook and an RBI single by Austin Nola. After Ole Miss cut it to 6-2 on Smith’s two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning, Tyler Hanover drove in two runs for LSU with a base hit in the bottom half.
“It was a disappointing effort for us today,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “You can’t do that here. We let them get three runs early and get the crowd into the game. They swung the bat well for a few innings.”
Ben Alsup earned the victory for LSU by allowing two runs in eight innings. He walked two and struck out eight. Ole Miss starter Austin Wright allowed all eight of LSU’s runs, five of them earned, and took the loss.
