Three days after a body was pulled from the Mississippi River near Kings Point Island, Warren County officials are hopeful identification from dental records will be made soon.
Deputy coroner Kelda Bailess said an autopsy was performed at the state crime lab Wednesday.
The body was discovered Monday night about 4 miles north of the Mississippi River bridges at Vicksburg.
The cause of death has not been released.
“They won’t give out any information until they make a positive identification,” Coroner Doug Huskey said this morning. “
We have no reason to suspect foul play,” the coroner said.
Sheriff Martin Pace said his investigators are working with “several” jurisdictions upstream that are working missing persons cases “in hopes that dental records will be able to identify the victim.”
Pace could not comment on whether the cases relate to accidental death or homicide, but reiterated that the death did not occur at the spot where the body was found. “The victim had been adrift in the river for quite some time,” he said.
The body, presumed to be a man because of its clothing, was first spotted by a river towboat operator.
Workers at Ergon Marine were radioed and took a small contact boat that was able to get closer to the river bank to check the report.
They then notified Pace, who responded in the sheriff’s rescue boat with Bailess, two deputies and a state fish and wildlife officer.
