Brandon, Key fluster WC again

Brandon sophomore Bo Key has three speeds on his pitches — slow, slower and glacial. If fastballs were cars, his would be a Yugo.

And yet, for a second straight Saturday, the right-hander with the 65 mph fastball managed to look like a combination of Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux against Warren Central.

Key held the Vikings scoreless for the last five innings and allowed only five hits to lead Brandon to a 9-4 victory. He struck out four batters, walked three and worked out of a seventh-inning jam to finish a complete-game win.

“Bo can throw three pitches for strikes. He can throw them any time he needs to and he’s always around the zone. Even though he doesn’t have the velocity of some other guys, he’s able to get grounders and pop ups and keep them off-balance,” Brandon coach Neill Bartling said.

It was the second consecutive effective start for Key against Warren Central (11-11). The slow-throwing sophomore gave up two runs in four innings at Brandon last Saturday before getting roughed up in the fifth and leaving with a no-decision.

In both games, Warren Central’s hitters struggled to make adjustments against Key. The longer they waited on his pitches, the slower they seemed to get and the more frustrated they grew.

Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the first inning — Warren Central’s third in two games against Key — and Beau Wallace singled in a run in the second to put the Vikings ahead 4-2. After that, however, they managed only three hits the rest of the way. Two of them came in the seventh inning.

Warren Central has now lost 11 straight games against Brandon, a streak that dates back to 2006.

“It was a frustrating day for us, especially offensively,” WC coach Josh Abraham said. “We made the adjustments well against him last Saturday and today we didn’t.”

Brandon’s hitters made it just as frustrating for WC’s defense. The Bulldogs (13-8) pounded out 15 hits, only a few them on hard-hit balls. They kept pace with the Vikings early, then pulled away late.

After Patrick Howard’s two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning put the Bulldogs ahead 5-4, they started the sixth with five consecutive singles. The last two, by John Harvey and Chris Steverson, brought in runs and capped a four-run rally that pushed the lead to 9-4.

WC had runners on in the fifth and sixth innings, but one was caught stealing and another erased on a double play. It loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh before a one-hop grounder to third ended the game.

“Our guys have done a good job of keeping the barrel of the bat in the zone. When you do that, balls find holes,” Bartling said. “That gives us 51 hits in our last four games. Our guys are seeing the ball well.”

Warren Central will return to action Tuesday night at 7, at home against Greenville-Weston.

Port Gibson 9, Hazlehurst 6

Dominic Savage went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and four RBIs to lead Port Gibson (9-12) past Hazlehurst. Savage hit a three-run homer in the third inning, then an RBI double in the fifth.

Darius Moore and Silento Sayles had two hits apiece for Port Gibson.
