Southern Miss’ comeback wasn’t the biggest of the day in Conference USA, but that didn’t make it any less impressive.
Adam Doleac hit a game-tying grand slam in the seventh inning and the Golden Eagles scored all of their runs in the last four innings to beat Memphis 8-5 on Sunday.
Southern Miss overcame a 5-0 deficit after two innings. It was one of three big comebacks in C-USA on Sunday. UAB rallied from a 6-0 deficit before losing 8-7 to Houston, while Central Florida dug out of a 7-0 hole to beat Tulane 8-7.
Southern Miss fell behind 5-0 after two innings. Phillip Chapman hit a three-run homer for Memphis (19-12, 3-3 C-USA), and Drew Martinez had an RBI single as part of a 3-for-5 performance.
Southern Miss (23-8, 6-3) got a run back in the sixth inning, then tied it in the seventh on Doleac’s grand slam. In the eighth, B.A. Vollmuth belted a two-run homer to put the Golden Eagles ahead for the first time, and they added an insurance run in the ninth on a squeeze bunt by Justin Dilliberto.
Dillon Day (1-0) pitched five innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for Southern Miss. He allowed four hits, struck out four and walked none.
