It was a big Senior Night game for Warren Central seniors Carlos Gonzalez and Buddy Cook.

Gonzalez, a Hinds Community College signee, blasted a grand slam to highlight a seven-run, fourth inning, while Cook had two hits in his first start in over a year as the Vikings (12-11) beat Greenville-Weston 12-8 Tuesday night at Viking Field.

For Gonzalez, the slam was his second this season.

“Clinton was better, because it was Clinton, but this was pretty good because it came on Senior Night,” Gonzalez said. “When I went up there, I didn’t want to do too much. But he put ball in there and I was able to get around on it.”

The slam extended a 4-2 lead to 8-2. Gonzalez added an RBI double in the fifth inning to key a four-run outburst to answer a four-spot by the Hornets to make it 11-6. Gonzalez later scored on a single by Will Stegall for a 12-6 lead.

WC coach Josh Abraham was glad to see Gonzalez and the rest of the Viking seniors have a good night in their final regular-season home game.

“Carlos is starting to see the ball well again,” Abraham said. “These seniors certainly earned the right to compete tonight. I will truly miss every one of them.”

One of those was Cook, who started at third base and then moved over to second when fellow senior, Blake Jobe, came to the mound in the fifth inning.

“I was just honored to be out on the field again and get to play for Coach Abraham,” Cook said.

Cook helped his cause when he started the Vikings’ rally in the fourth inning. They were down 2-1 following Donovan Moore’s two-run homer in the third inning.

Hunter Austin led off the Viking fourth by reaching on an error and then scored on Bill McRight’s single to right center. Cook followed with a double to right to make it 3-2.

Following a pop-up, Beau Wallace doubled to right to score Cook for a 4-2 lead. Brandon Gates was hit by a pitch and Clayton Ashley walked to load the bases for Gonzalez. On a 2-2 pitch from Moore, Gonzalez ripped it to left for the slam.

WC finished with nine hits in the game, five going for extra bases. Gates had an RBI double in the first.

Wallace went four innings and struck out five with the lone blow being Moore’s home run. The win moves him to 4-1 on the season. Jobe pitched the final three innings in his first work in nearly three weeks.

“I thought he (Jobe) threw it well,” Abraham said. “He struggled some in his first inning, but we made some errors behind him. He came back and polished it up.”

The Hornets (3-14) did get a run each in the sixth and seventh innings to account for the final tally. Jarvis Green had a double and two runs scored while Moore drove in two with his home run.

Warren Central will close out the regular season with three straight road games starting at Madison Central Friday, Terry on Saturday and Natchez on Monday. Abraham said the Vikings will likely start their playoff series at either Starkville or Columbus on April 21 and then finish the series at Viking Field on April 22.
