It was, in the words of video game Mortal Kombat, a flawless victory.

Madison Central wrapped up a Class 6A first-round playoff series in high form, blasting Warren Central 15-0 in four brutal innings at Lucy Young Field on Saturday. The win completed a sweep for Madison Central, which won 12-2 in Game 1 in the best-of-three series.

Junior pitcher Kelly Young flirted with a perfect game and only a third-inning walk spoiled the bid. She struck out seven in a no-hit shutout.

The offense for Madison Central ripped the Lady Vikes for 14 hits and nearly every player on the lineup card had a knock.

“We were pretty good today,” Madison Central coach Kayla Watkins said. “We’re definitely getting there. Offensively and pitching-wise, if we keep playing like this, we’ve got a shot (to win state).”

WC (13-13) was anything but perfect. Starter Megan McCullough was tagged for all 15 runs and was pulled after throwing 32⁄3 innings. Behind her, the WC defense wasn’t much better, committing five errors.

Offensively, only one Lady Vike, Chelsea Worley, reached base and that was on a walk. The loss marked the second day in a row that the Lady Vikes couldn’t notch a single base knock.

“To beat a team like that, you have to play picture-perfect,” WC coach Dana McGivney said. “We didn’t do that.”

The Jaguars started slowly1 out of the gate, taking advantage of a bad throw to home plate to take a 1-0 lead.

But in the third, they blew open the contest. Jamie Smith ripped a one-out double and Kelly Young followed with a single. An error plated the first run, while Crystal Kehtel drove in another with a single. Brittney McBrain capped off a five-run inning with a two-RBI double to put Madison Central on top, 6-0.

Then the Jaguars landed the knockout blow. One-out singles by Smith and Young put two runners on for Claire Hobson, who drove in one with a double. Kehtel walked, McBrain drove in another with a single, Bailey Stokes plated a pair with a double that rapped off the fence and the rout was on. Worley relieved McCullough and got a groundout to end the frame, but not before the Lady Jaguars had put nine runs on the board.

Leading the way for Madison Central was Young, who went 4-for-4 with a RBI. Murray and McBrain drove in three runs apiece for Madison.

NW Rankin 10, Vicksburg 0

Northwest Rankin pitcher Danielle Smith struck out nine and the Lady Cougars tallied 10 hits to finish off a best-of-three, first-round series against the Missy Gators.

Faith Thomas took the loss for Vicksburg, which finished the season 11-13.
