Southern Miss was able to break free of the pack this weekend. It wasn’t able to finish off a sweep.
Zach Wright went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and East Carolina wasted most of a seven-run lead before hanging on to beat Southern Miss 7-6 Sunday in the series finale.
Southern Miss scored three runs in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth to chop a 7-0 deficit down to a single run. Adam Doleac’s RBI double was the Golden Eagles’ last gasp, though. Ashley Graeter followed with a fly out to left to end the game and leave the go-ahead run on second base.
Despite the loss, Southern Miss (32-11, 11-4) still took two out of three from East Carolina (28-16, 9-9) and opened a two-game lead in the Conference USA standings on Houston and Rice.
Isaac Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for USM, while Doleac, B.A. Vollmuth and Marc Bourgeois each had two hits and one RBI. Corey Thompson and Mike Ussery drove in two runs apiece for East Carolina.
