Belhaven, Carey split in regionals

Mississippi’s two NAIA schools had different fates in their national tournament openers Thursday.

Belhaven scored the go-ahead run on an infield single by Jimmy Gilford in the top of the 10th inning and beat Fresno Pacific 10-9 in the Oklahoma City regional.

William Carey, meanwhile, stranded 19 base runners and gave up eight two-out runs in a 10-7 loss to Edward Waters in the Daytona Beach regional.

Belhaven (44-16) advanced to face host Oklahoma City University today at 2:30 p.m., after a wild opener. The Blazers trailed 2-1 after six innings, then the teams combined for 16 runs and 21 hits in the last four innings.

William Carey, however, let one slip away and fell into an elimination game against Campbellsville this morning. William Carey (30-26) left the bases loaded in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings against Edward Waters.

Jordan Prout was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for Carey, and Quinn Stokes was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
