A Vicksburg man out on bond for armed robbery was in the Warren County Jail this morning, charged in the Tuesday afternoon shooting death of a man on Martha Street after an argument over dice, police said.
James Ransom, 19, 1717 Martha St., is accused of shooting Robert Banks, 20, 226 High Hill Drive, at about 4 p.m., said Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong.
He said Ransom was arrested at the scene without incident and was being held without bond until an appearance in municipal court today.
Banks was taken by ambulance to River Region Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about 5:15 p.m. from a single gunshot wound to the chest, said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey.
Armstrong said the shooting followed an argument between Ransom and Banks earlier in the day. He said the shooting remains under investigation, but preliminary information from the scene indicated that Ransom was standing on the front porch of his home and shot Banks, who was in the street.
Police Lt. Bobby Stewart said the two had been gambling with dice when the argument led to the shooting.
Armstrong said police received multiple 911 calls about the shooting about 4 p.m., and officers arrived at the scene to find Banks lying in the middle of the street.
The chief said investigators have not recovered the handgun used in the shooting, and police would continue looking for it today.
Armstrong said Ransom was indicted in January for an armed robbery reported at 3 a.m. on April 4, 2010, when $13 was taken from a man in a parking lot in the 1300 block of Washington Street. He was out on $15,000 bond, according to police records.
Tuesday’s shooting death was the second homicide reported in Warren County since Thursday, the third in the city this year and the sixth in all of the county this year.
On Thursday, Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Allen, 36, 1626 Broadhill Drive, was gunned down as he stepped out of a vehicle on Dillon Ridge Road in north Warren County. His father, Winifred Allen, 64, 2255 Freetown Road, Lot 1, remains in the Warren County Jail on a charge of murder.
Earlier last week, a Michael Justin Tornero, 26, of Houston, who was working in Vicksburg, was shot and died in a motel room. His roommate and co-worker, Daniel O’Neil Dodd, 28, Tyler, Texas, was released from the county jail on a $32,000 bond in the case that police have said they believe to have been an accidental shooting. Warren County District Attorney Ricky Smith said the case against Dodd will be presented to the Warren County grand jury that convenes in July.
In another killing last week, ruled accidental, Richard “Ricky” Selby, 62, 4747 Bovina Cutoff Road, died as he attempted to take something from the trunk of a vehicle and a loaded gun discharged and hit him in the chest.
