Vicksburg, Laurel girls take wins in pageant’s first night

Miss Riverland’s Outstanding Teen Anne Elizabeth Buys won the evening wear preliminary contest and Miss Delta Blue’s Outstanding Teen Lydia Myers won the talent portion in the seventh annual Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant opening night Thursday.

Anne Elizabeth, 15, is the daughter of Judy and Mark Buys of Vicksburg and is a student at Porters Chapel Academy.

Lydia, 14, is the daughter of Teri and Bill Myers of Laurel and attends Northeast Jones Middle School. In the talent competition, she sang “On My Own” from the musical Les Misérables.

Each preliminary winner receives a $150 savings bond.

Twenty-four contestants ages 13 to 17 are competing in five categories: private interview, talent, lifestyle and fitness, evening gown with onstage questions and scholastic achievement.

The top 10 will compete Saturday night in all categories except private interview and scholastic achievement.

The final winner will advance to the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant on Aug. 20 in Orlando.

Preliminary competition in evening wear and talent continues tonight at 8. The final night of competition is at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Contests are at the Vicksburg City Auditorium, 901 Monroe St. Tickets are $20 for tonight and $25 for Saturday night.
