MLB draft dips heavily into state

Twenty-nine baseball players from the state of Mississippi were among the 871 players selected in the second day of the MLB draft.
The final 20 rounds begin today and players have until Aug. 15 to sign.
Sumrall High’s Connor Barron, a Southern Miss signee, was the first state player taken, in the third round with the 102nd overall pick by the Florida Marlins.
But the state’s colleges were well-represented too.
Five Ole Miss players went off the board on the second day.
David Goforth was drafted in the seventh round, 221st overall, by the Milwaukee Brewers. The junior hurler served as the Saturday starter this season, making 14 starts with a 4-8 record.
Pitcher Austin Wright was the second Rebel drafted and was taken in the eighth round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eighth round as the 271st pick overall.
Wright posted a 5-4 record in 2011, his first with the Rebels after transferring from Chipola Junior College, and struck out a team-leading 67 batters.
Catcher Miles Hamblin was taken by the Houston Astros in the 12th round as the 370th overall pick. He hit .259 for the Rebels, tallying six home runs and 26 RBIs. Junior left-hander Matt Crouse and senior lefthander Matt Tracy were both taken in the 24th round of the draft. Crouse was selected by the Detroit Tigers (737th pick overall. Tracy was taken by the New York Yankees (749th pick overall).
Southern Miss had four players and four signees drafted. First to go was Southern Miss junior infielder B.A. Vollmuth, who was taken by the Oakland Athletics with the 105th pick in the third round.
Seniors Tyler Koelling, Collin Cargill and Todd McInnis, along with three Southern Miss baseball signees, were taken in the later rounds. Koelling, who won the 2011 Cellular South Ferriss Trophy and hit a team-best .362 with with 18 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 46 RBIs, was taken the third round with the 105th pick by the Oakland A’s.
Cargill, who was the school’s all-time saves leader with 30, was taken in the 22nd round as the 673rd overall pick by the Florida Marlins. McInnis went to the St. Louis Cardinals with the 25th round, the 770th pick overall. He finished as the school’s career victories leader with 33.
Southern Miss also had three signees chosen in the afternoon hours. Those included third baseman Bradley Roney of Wetumpka, Ala., who was taken in the 18th round by the Baltimore Orioles, right-handed pitcher Taylor Nunez of Salmen High of Slidell, La., who was taken in the 19th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates and centerfielder Mason Robbins of George County in Lucedale, who earned selection by the New York Mets in the 20th round.
Three Mississippi State players were taken in the draft’s second day. Junior right-hander Devin Jones was selected in the ninth round by the Baltimore Orioles (275th selection overall). Senior infielder Nick Vickerson was a 20th round pick of the Texas Rangers (624th selection). Senior third baseman Jarrod Parks, who was a Ferriss Trophy finalist, was a 24th round pick of the California Angels (735th pick overall).
Two State signees were also taken. Right-handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff of Wheeler (Miss.) was selected in the fifth round by the Texas Rangers while left-handed pitcher Jacob Lindgren of St. Stanislaus was a 12th-round pick of the Chicago Cubs.
