A veterans group from Texas felt Mississippi River flood victims were getting lost in the shuffle, so they decided to do something about it.
Seven men and women from American Legion Post No. 243 in Mount Vernon traveled to Vicksburg Friday to deliver a trailer of supplies.
“Everyone has been focusing on the tornado victims (in Joplin, Mo.), and we wanted to help with the flood,” said Pam Bolin, president of the group’s Ladies Auxiliary. “We wanted a spot on the river, and we wanted to know the items would go to the people who need them.”
More than 3,200 people in Warren County have been displaced by the flood. The river at Vicksburg crested at 57.1 feet on May 19, the highest mark since 1927. On May 22, three days after the crest, a tornado hit Joplin, causing extensive damage and shifting relief efforts from Mississippi.
With a 24-foot trailer in tow, the Post 243 members, three men and four women, left Texas at 3 a.m. Friday to begin the 300-mile journey to Vicksburg. When they arrived, they were directed to the United Way of West Central Mississippi’s headquarters on South Street to unload nearly 8,000 pounds of supplies.
“They really overdid it,” said Louis Hasty, commander of American Legion Post No. 3 in Vicksburg. “I never would have imagined they could bring this much, and every bit of it was donated. They sure worked hard.”
Water, canned goods, shovels, fans, grills and bug spray are few of the items.
