A domestic dispute in Vicksburg Monday night resulted in the death of a 45-year-old Vicksburg father of two and the arrest of his live-in girlfriend, police Lt. Bobby Stewart said

Michael Terrence Smith, 2910 Arcadia Place, died of multiple stab wounds, said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey, who pronounced Smith dead at the home at 11:15 p.m.

Annette Scott, 44, was charged with murder, Stewart said. She was in the Warren County Jail without bond this morning pending an initial hearing police hoped would be today.

Smith was a 1983 graduate of Warren Central High School and worked at Tyson Foods, said Nicole Smith, his former wife.

He had two sons, Nicholas, 18, and Terrence, 17, with whom he was very close, she said.

“He was very active, very physically fit,” Nicole Smith said. “He liked to work out and he ran in the (Vicksburg National Military) Park.”

Police were called to his home on a side street off Avenue D between Washington and Drummond streets at 10:07 p.m., said Stewart.

“Upon arrival they found Smith had been stabbed at least twice in the chest after a verbal altercation turned physical,” he said. Investigators have recovered a knife they believe was used in the stabbing, said the lieutenant.

Details surrounding the argument were being investigated, but police records going back five years did not indicate a history of domestic abuse or incidents, Stewart said. Scott had several previous misdemeanor arrests including one for simple assault, he said. No previous records were found on Smith, he added.

Smith’s body will be sent to the Mississippi crime lab for an autopsy, Huskey said.

Funeral arrangements for Smith are pending, with Jefferson Funeral Home in charge.

The death was the second Vicksburg police investigated Monday, following by about eight hours the shooting death of 11-year-old Christian Jordan of Kiln, which was believed to have been accidental. Christian was shot while sitting in his father’s truck in the parking lot of Goldie’s Trail Barbeque on South Frontage Road. A 14-year-old family friend was moving a handgun in the truck when it accidentally fired, police said.

Two other homicides have been recorded in Vicksburg this year, along with three more outside city limits in Warren County, all from gunshot wounds.

The city cases are:

• Michael Justin Tornero, 26, of Houston, who was working in Vicksburg, was shot and died May 23 in a motel room. His roommate and co-worker, Daniel O’Neil Dodd, 28, Tyler, Texas, was released from the county jail on a $32,000 bond. Police have said they believe the shooting was accidental. District Attorney Ricky Smith said the Dodd case will be presented to the July term of the Warren County grand jury.

• Robert Banks, 19, 226 High Hill Drive, was shot May 31 following an argument over a dice game, police have said.

In another city killing, Maurice Morris, 19, 2228 Grove St., was found dead of a gunshot wound hours after an attempted robbery outside Confederate Ridge Apartments on U.S. 61 North. Police believe Morris and another man were attempting to rob two other men when shots were exchanged the night before Morris’ body was found.

The county cases are:

• Timothy Wayne Harmon, 25, who was shot in the early morning hours of Jan. 6 at his home at 3400 U.S. 80, Lot 4. Jeremy Blake Bowlin, 18, the son of Harmon’s live-in girlfriend, was indicted for murder that month.

• Alicia Michelle Vega, 32, was shot May 2 at her home at 100 Jones Road, Lot 19. Vega’s step-daughter, 14-year-old Tyla Vega, has been arrested and charged in the case.

• On May 26, Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Allen, 36, 1626 Broadhill Drive, was shot as he stepped out of a vehicle on Dillon Ridge Road in north Warren County. His father, Winifred Allen, 64, 2255 Freetown Road, Lot 1, was charged with murder in the case.

Another shooting death May 24 was ruled accidental. Richard “Ricky” Selby, 62, 4747 Bovina Cutoff Road, died as he attempted to take something from the trunk of a vehicle and a loaded gun discharged and hit him in the chest.
