Two people have been charged in the early Friday morning death of a 20-year-old Vicksburg man, police said Friday evening.

Rondell Galvin, 20, 209 Overlook Drive, is charged with capital murder, and James Walker, 37, 33 Johnson Drive, is charged with accessory after the fact, said Sgt. Sandra Williams.

Galvin is believed to have shot William J. Jones Jr. and to have robbed him of an undetermined amount of cash, Williams said. Homicide, in conjunction with robbery, elevates the charges to capital murder.

Jones, who lived with his parents at 280 Curry St., was shot in front of his home about 2:15 a.m. Friday, police said. A police dog team searched the area for a weapon later in the morning, but it was not known if it had been recovered.

An autopsy Friday confirmed that Jones died from a gunshot wound to the chest, said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey, who had declared Jones dead at the scene.

Galvin was arrested at 7:04 a.m. at 1690 Warrenton Road, said Williams, and Walker was picked up at 9:55 a.m. in the 200 block of Winters Lane.

No further details about the arrests were released, but Williams said Jones had been with friends Thursday night into Friday morning.

“We have discovered that Mr. Jones was dropped off at his residence about 2:15 by a friend,” she said. “Shortly after, he was approached by Mr. Galvin, and the encounter led to his death.”

Police Chief Walter Armstrong said Friday detectives were investigating whether the shooting was the result of an argument earlier in the evening, and were talking with neighbors and other possible witnesses.

Both Galvin and Walker were to be taken to the Warren County Jail Friday night and held without bond pending initial hearings in Vicksburg Municipal Court Monday.

Jones’ death was the fifth homicide in the city this year and the eighth total for Warren County.
