Mississippi River Gas Company of Port Gibson is expanding its coverage area in Vicksburg.

The company is offering natural gas to nearly 300 customers in the Warrenton Heights area in the southern part of the city.

“These streets are in our certified area,” said Trent Johnson of the company that serves about 1,400 customers. “This area has gone unnoticed, and we saw potential.”

The expansion means areas along Belva Drive, Ethel Street, Linda Circle, Maple Circle, Long Meadow Drive, Dru Drive, Ross Lane and Singing Hills Road could see work as early as next week.

3T Construction of Edwards will bore three miles of gas lines into the ground using trenchless installation. Residents should not lose electricity or water, Johnson said, though they can expect a hole or two in the yard.

“We’ll be digging, but we’ll also be making the repairs,” Johnson said. “By boring the main, we’ll be causing less of a disruption.”

Mississippi River Gas has been preparing for the expansion for about a year, Johnson said, and the project should be finished in about three months. Workers will be signing up new customers as they go.

Most city residents are offered natural gas through the Vicksburg Water and Gas Administration.

Warrenton Heights and other areas in the southern part of the city that were annexed in 1990 are serviced by Mississippi River Gas.
