A traffic stop on Wisconsin Avenue Sunday resulted in the arrest of two Vicksburg men and the seizure of about 3 ounces of cocaine, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.
Pace said deputies arrested Chauncey D. Rankin, 21, 2991 N. Washington St., and Jeremy Johnson, 22, 525 Field St., after drugs were found during the traffic stop in the Toyota driven by Johnson. He said the arrests resulted in a search warrant for Rankin’s home, where sheriff’s detectives found more cocaine and a handgun.
Both men, the sheriff said, face charges of possession of less than 3 ounces of cocaine with intent to distribute. Rankin, he said, has outstanding warrants from Vicksburg police charging him with sale of cocaine. Both men are being held without bond in the Warren County Jail pending an initial appearance in justice court. Vicksburg police Sgt. Sandra Williams said Rankin was on probation for a previous drug conviction.
Pace said the arrests occurred about 6 p.m. after deputy Ben Ratliff stopped Johnson’s car on Wisconsin. While Ratliff was talking to the men, he noticed that Rankin, the passenger, was hiding something in his mouth.
When a second deputy arrived, he said, they asked Rankin to step out of the car, and Rankin pulled out a plastic bag of cocaine from his pants and threw it. The deputies recovered the bag and found about 3 ounces of cocaine in it. A search after the arrest revealed other, smaller plastic bags of cocaine in the car, Pace said.
He said deputies served a search warrant on Rankin’s house and found more cocaine in small plastic bags, scales and a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun with the serial number removed.
