The Siege of Vicksburg had to survive a hard-fought, nine-inning semifinal Sunday just to reach the 14-year-olds’ Governor’s Cup championship game.
It was a great victory and, it turned out, their last in the tournament.
The Warhawks scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on the beat the Siege, 15-5, to claim the title. Colin Coates hit a grand slam for the Warhawks, a team comprised of players ranging from Southaven to Shreveport — and that includes two Vicksburg residents, Austin Magoun and Rhett Hasty.
The Siege beat Legit Baseball 7-5 in the semifinals. That game went nine innings and lasted nearly 2 ½ hours. The Siege jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the championship game but things quickly went south. Five walks contributed to the Warhawks’ big first inning.
Sam Kirk had a two-run double for the Siege in the championship game.
“Nine innings in 100-plus heat, that took a lot out of us,” Siege coach Pat Chambers said. “We ran out of gas. We got up and walked several. We really just couldn’t put anything together. Then they got a couple hits against us and I think that’s really when the fatigue hit.”
In other championship games the Sterlington Bombers beat the Vidalia Diamond Dawgs to win the 8-year-olds’ crown, and the Madison County Thunder beat the Mayhem, 13-7, for the 12-year-olds’ title.
