U.S. Army Corps of Engineers archaeologist Chris Koeppel will speak Tuesday at the August session of the Lower Delta Talks in Rolling Fork.

Koeppel, the Corps’ chief of the Upper Delta Environmental Planning Section, will speak about archaeological findings from the Red Barn site at 6:30 p.m. at the Sharkey-Issaquena County Library, 116 E. China St.

He will present findings during excavations of the 33-acre site, which was purchased by the U.S. Department of Defense in April 2010 to build a $6 million, 3,800-square-foot interpretive and educational center on Delta wildlife, culture and history. The site purchase included the 93-year-old iconic Red Barn, which collapsed in May because of heavy winds and years of neglect.

Corps spokesman Kavanaugh Breazeale said there have been talks among Corps, state and local officials about preserving the Red Barn.

Excavation findings at the site in October 2010 delayed a June 2012 opening, but budget cuts to the DoD this spring suspended the project indefinitely, Breazeale said.
