Vicksburg’s mistakes proved to be its undoing against Brandon on Friday.

The Bulldogs took advantage of nearly every one of them in a 47-14 beatdown in the 49th annual Red Carpet Bowl.

“This one is on me,” Vicksburg coach Alonzo Stevens said. “This one is my fault. We were not mentally ready.”

The Gators 11 penalties, committed four turnovers and had a punt partially blocked and a bad snap that was recovered deep in their own territory.

Vicksburg was made one dimensional by a stout Brandon front seven, which held the Gators without a rushing yard in the first half. They finished with just 22 yards on the ground.

Vicksburg quarterback Cameron Cooksey threw a pair of second-half TD strikes when the game had already been decided, one a 3-yard toss to tight end Dillard Reed and a 48-yard connection to A.J. Stamps. But he threw two interceptions, was sacked twice, lost one fumble and was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone for a safety.

The Gator offense struggled for most of the contest, not recording a first down until the second quarter and only crossing into Brandon territory three times.

“The defense played great at times, but on offense, we could never get anything going,” Cooksey said.
