Chargers shock Vikings in OT

Callaway ran an incredible 89 plays against Warren Central, but it’s the last two the Vikings will have a hard time digesting.

The Vikings (0-2) had two chances to stop Callaway quarterback T.J. Washington from the 3-yard line in the second overtime period. Both times, Washington found a way to get in, the last while strutting upright on a game-winning, two-point conversion as the Chargers won 36-35 Friday night at Viking Stadium.

The conversion capped a huge night for Washington. He had five touchdowns on runs of 3, 26, 1, 2 and 3 yards, and the final two-point conversion to account for 32 of Callaway’s 36 points. He ended with 99 yards rushing and 139 passing.

Warren Central had just 40 plays for the entire game, yet still managed to put up 35 points. Chase Ladd tossed three touchdown passes, the last coming on a 10-yarder to Greg King to start the second overtime. Devon Bell booted a do or die 42-yard field goal with 17.4 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Second-year coach Josh Morgan was both very proud and disgusted at the same time, following the most gut-wrenching loss of his career with Warren Central (0-2).

“First of all, I’m very disappointed we lost the game,” Morgan said. “But, I’m also very proud of our boys’ effort. They gave every single ounce of effort they had. We were outweighed by 100 pounds a man on both sides of the ball.”

Callaway coach Darryl Jones was glad Washington was able to come through late thanks to his beefy offensive line that featured 340-pound tackle Justin Spears and 290-pound sophomore guard Roderick Taylor. All but one of Washington’s runs came behind his mammoth linemen.

“He’s a tough quarterback and we hung in there,” Jones said. “The last two plays were his option all the way. We just had to overcome a lot of adversity,”

The Chargers were down 25-16 early in the third quarter after Ladd hit Kourey Davis on a 61-yard touchdown play. Davis, a 6-foot-5 junior receiver and quarterback, had a huge game. He caught a 49-yard TD pass in the first quarter and also had runs of 34 and 20 yards to set up Aaron Stamps’ 1-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Warren Central, however, hurt itself on conversion plays while Callaway consistently came up big. The Vikings had an extra point blocked and then missed on a pair of two-point conversion attempts. The missed tries left WC with just an 18-16 halftime lead. The Chargers followed two of Washington’s first half scores with two-point runs from Darryl Jones, Jr.

Callaway also came up big on third- and fourth-down plays. Washington, who was 15-of-27 for 139 yards passing, had a third-and-15 conversion pass go for 24 yards to Tradell Williams to set up a 1-yard plunge to make it 25-22 with 10:36 left in the game.

Later in the quarter, Washington converted two fourth-down passes and another third-and-11 to key a 17-play, 67-yard march that put Callaway ahead 28-25 with 50 seconds left.

The Vikings’ special teams answered. Callaway tried to pooch kick but Stamps thwarted the plan, finding a seam down the sideline for a 49-yard kickoff return. That put the Vikings at the Charger 21 with 23 seconds left.

Three pass attempts resulted in two incompletions and a sack, but Bell came through with his 42-yard field goal to tie it at 28.

WC went nowhere on its first overtime possession and Bell missed a 29-yard field goal. The Vikings’ defense, however, managed to keep Washington out on a fourth down play from the 10 to send the game into a second overtime.

Callaway finished with 419 yards in total offense to WC’s 232.
