Fothergill paces Lady Vikes’ rout

Freshman catcher Victoria Fothergill took advantage of being the last Warren Central batter to hit Tuesday against visiting Greenville-Weston.

Fothergill had a pair of two-run singles to lead the Lady Vikes past Greenville-Weston 16-3 at Lucy Young Field. The win moves WC to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in Region 2-6A play. The Lady Vikes have road dates at Forest Hill on Thursday and Clinton next week in between their final home game Sept. 20 against rival Vicksburg.

Fothergill said she understands why she usually hits near the bottom of the 10-player WC lineup.

“I’m a catcher and we have a lot of great hitters on our team,” Fothergill said.

On Tuesday, Fothergill stood out against the Honey Bees. Her two-run single in the second inning highlighted an eight-run outburst to give WC an 8-0 lead.

Greenville-Weston took advantage of some walks and a double to cut the spread to 8-3 in the third inning. WC responded with eight more runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the game by run rule. Fothergill’s second, two-run single was the last play of the game.

“Today, I waited on the ball,” Fothergill said. “Coach (Dana) McGivney has given us some good instruction and today, it just stuck.”

Fothergill added that she is using slow-pitch to prepare for next spring’s fast-pitch season. It will also mark her last season with the WC varsity.

“My father is in the Coast Guard and we’re moving next summer, we just don’t know where yet,” Fothergill said. “I’ve been here since sixth grade and before coming here, we were in Key West, (Fla.). Before that, I spent eight years between Washington State and Oregon.

“I’m looking forward to fast-pitch, but I also think slow-pitch definitely helps with sportsmanship and being on a team.”

Every Lady Vike in the lineup had either a hit or a run scored. Fothergill led the way with four RBIs.

Lawren Boolos drove in three run off a two-run single in the second and a ground ball in the fourth. Brooke Patterson had two hits and two runs scored while Raylee Barwick and Karleigh Hinson each drove in a run.
