Three Warren County residents died and a teenager remains hospitalized in Jackson following a weekend that saw two fatal car wrecks and accidental gunplay, authorities said.
Ashley King, 19, was injured just before 5 a.m. Sunday when her vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian, Anthony Sims, 40, on U.S. 80 near Deer Ridge Road, Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol spokesman Cpl. Odis Easterling said.
Later, around 8:30 p.m., Kenneth Patterson, 32, 3159 Mount Alban Road, was killed in a single-car wreck at Jeff Davis and Mallet roads, Sheriff Martin Pace said.
And in what has been ruled an accidental shooting, Jacob Foster, 27, 107 Saint Patrick St., died early Saturday morning from a gunshot wound to the head, Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said.
The bodies of Sims, Patterson and Foster have been sent to the state crime lab for autopsies, Huskey said. Toxicology tests will be included in the examinations, he said.
Authorities were not sure why Sims, who was staying with family in Vicksburg, was walking on the highway. He was not carrying identification but did have a cell phone, which was used to identify him and notify family members, said Easterling.
“He liked to talk to people,” Sims’ mother, Brenda Coleman of Richland Park, Ill., said this morning. “He was a friendly person, very happy-go-lucky. He was not a troublesome kid, just sometimes a kid down on his luck.”
He was from the Chicago area and had lived in Vicksburg for about five years, she said. He worked at The Home Depot.
The wreck was reported to Warren County 911 at 4:58 a.m., said Huskey. Sims died from “massive head injury,” said the coroner, who pronounced him dead at the scene at 5:35 a.m.
After her 2006 Nissan Sentra hit Sims, King lost control of the car, veered off the road and down an embankment, said Easterling. She was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected, he said.
King, whose address was unavailable, was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson, where she was upgraded from serious condition Sunday night to good condition this morning, said hospital spokesman Peggy Wagner.
No charges have been filed against King, Easterling said.
W.W. Holt Funeral Home in Harvey, Ill., will have charge of arrangements for Sims, said Huskey.
In addition to his mother, Sims leaves seven children; his grandparents, Albert and Lucy Sims of Vicksburg; and aunts, uncles and cousins, said Coleman.
Sunday night, Patterson was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer eastbound on Jeff Davis, said Pace.
“It appears that as he approached Mallet Road, he ran off the left side of the road and probably overcompensated and lost control,” said the sheriff, who received the call at 8:23 p.m. “The vehicle overturned several times and came to rest back on its wheels sitting broadside in the road.”
No other vehicles are believed to have been involved, said the sheriff. Patterson was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected, said Pace.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:24 p.m. from head trauma, said Huskey.
Patterson leaves his parents, Kenneth and Linda Patterson. Riles Funeral Home has charge of arrangements, Huskey said.
Foster’s death is under investigation but is believed to be from an accidental gunshot from a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol, said Huskey, who pronounced him dead at 1:05 a.m. Saturday at 2505 Warriors Trail, Lot 20.
“This is still an open investigation but our initial findings are that Mr. Foster, only moments after arriving at the trailer with friends, picked up the gun and was handling it when it discharged, striking him in the head,” said Pace.
Foster was killed instantly, said the sheriff, and no one else was injured.
A native of Vicksburg, Foster had attended Beechwood Elementary and Warren Central High School. He was an avid fisherman and worked for his brother Joey at Weld-Tech Fabrications.
His funeral was being planned for Tuesday at Glenwood Funeral Home.
In another wreck, an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer hit another vehicle at U.S. 61 North and Oak Ridge Road at about 8 this morning.
Trooper Craig Morton said the truck driver, Charles Tilley, 51, 56 Redhawk Road, was northbound on U.S. 61 when he struck a vehicle, also northbound, as it was turning east onto Oak Ridge Road. The vehicle was not identified because it did not stop when it was struck.
No injuries were reported, said Morton.
Sims’ and Patterson’s deaths were the fifth and sixth traffic fatalities in Warren County this year; Foster’s death was the third accidental gunshot fatality in the county this year.
