Housing board to trim number of applicants

The Vicksburg Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday to narrow the list of 35 applicants for executive director.
The board is seeking a director to replace Dannie Walker, who resigned in mid-August to take a similar job with the Ozark, Ala., Housing Authority. Walker, 52, had been the Housing Authority’s executive director for two years.
The board’s decision to call the Monday meeting came after an almost-two-hour executive session in which members discussed personnel issues involving present housing authority employees.
“We did not have an opportunity to review the new applications we received today, because we had other personnel issues to review. We’re holding the meeting Monday strictly to discuss the applicants for the executive director’s job,” board chairman Christopher Barnett Sr. said.
Barnett said the board wants to begin interviewing candidates on Sept. 28, and have a new director hired by mid-October. He said there currently are no plans to name an interim director.
In other action, the board:
• Approved paying the August invoices.
• Approved the July financial reports.
• Received an update on the installation of new security screens and storm doors at Rolling Acres.
• Accepted a $75,000 bid from Lubin Enterprises of Memphis to replace cluster mailboxes at the Rolling Acres, Beechwood and Cedars Estates complexes.
• Learned that Jennifer Alpha of the U.S. General Accountability Office will inspect Waltersville Estates on Thursday.
• Discussed replacing or repairing stairs at Valley Court, and an electrical problem at a building in Urban Court.
• Adopted a resolution authorizing Margie Carter of Lindsey and Co. to prepare an in-house budget revision for the 2011 fiscal year.
