Fine arts students in the Vicksburg Warren School District who receive letter awards for reaching specified goals in their activities also soon might be getting lettermen’s jackets paid for by the district.

The district’s five-member Board of Trustees is expected to discuss Thursday the change in policy that for generations has seen only student athletes receive the jackets at district expense.

“Those children are just as important and they should be recognized,” said District 1 Trustee Bryan Pratt, the first-year board member who proposed the expansion of the jacket program during a school board meeting last month. “They work as hard as our athletes.”

His plan is that students in the fine arts and academic sectors, including band, choir and robotics, receive the jackets.
