Unemployment drops in county, across state

Unemployment in Warren County was down in August, following the statewide trend, but remained in double digits.
The jobless rate was 11 percent during the month, off seven-tenths of a point from July, according to totals released by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. Mississippi’s rate was 10 percent, down 1.1 percent from July. Adjusted for seasonal factors in the workplace, the rate was 10.3 percent, a tenth of a point less than July.
Warren County’s labor force was 21,270, down from 22,280 in revised totals for July. The number of unemployed in August also was down, to 2,350 from 2,620 in July.
Nationally, unemployment was 9.1 percent, down two-tenths of a point for the month. Seasonally adjusted, the rate was unchanged, at 9.1 percent.
Rankin County posted the lowest unemployment in the state in August, at 5.8 percent, down eight-tenths of a point since July. Holmes and Clay counties tied for the highest joblessness in August, at 18.2 percent. Both were down about two points for the month.
Claiborne County recorded 15.9 percent unemployment in August, down from 17.7 percent in July. Rates in Sharkey and Issaquena counties were 11.1 and 13.7 percent, respectively, each down more than a point for the month.
