UTICA — Herbert F. Smith Jr. died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at his home in Utica. He was 83.

A lifelong resident of Utica, Mr. Smith retired from the Illinois Central Railroad after 25 years of service and later owned and operated Smith’s Grocery in Utica for 20 years. He was a member of the Utica Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert F. Sr. and Thelma Kinard Smith; and a brother, S.G. “Chubby” Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Willard Smith of Utica; a daughter, Jennifer Boles Cain of O’Fallon, Mo.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a nephew.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Utica Baptist Church with the Rev. Rocky Henriques, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the Utica Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the church from 1 p.m. Saturday until the service.
