Last Friday’s debacle at Hughes Field in Jackson was the most humbling night of Vicksburg coach Alonzo Stevens’ 40-year career in football.
The Gators, who were coming off their best performance of the season after a win against Lawrence County, turned in their worst in a 46-6 loss to Jim Hill.
“You’d think they had just won the Super Bowl with the way they celebrated,” Stevens said of the Tigers. “Jim Hill won’t win another game, but that doesn’t matter, because they beat us soundly. We were still celebrating our homecoming.”
Stevens said he could only remember one other time he felt that bad after a game.
“My second year here, I was the defensive coordinator and Warren Central was up 49-7. They called timeout, scored another touchdown, and beat us 55-7. I never forgot it. But hey, that’s football. What happened last Friday was just plain embarrassing because we were a no-show.”
