Candlelight Series

On Oct. 23, the nave at The Church of the Holy Trinity, Episcopal, will be aglow with candlelight and filled with the sounds of music as the Four Seasons of the Arts presents “Baroque Gems,” part of its Candlelight Series.

The performance, which will feature musicians from the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

“Once a year, we do a Baroque program,” said MSO conductor Crafton Beck, “written for a smaller room with a more intimate setting. This year’s program will be a mix of Italian, German and French musical pieces.”

Music from the Baroque period was composed before 1750. Well-known composers from the period include Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi and Alessandro Scarlatti.

In addition to Beck, the MSO’s principal trumpeter, Darcie Bishop, will perform, along with violinist Stephen Redfield, who is part of the music school faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi and a member of the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra.

Howell Gage, who has attended Four Seasons concerts in the past, said the performances feature “light classical music that’s easy to listen to.”

Four Seasons of the Arts is a local cultural organization that aims to bring the symphony and other performers to Vicksburg.

“This is by far one of our most impressive and awesome performances of the Four Seasons concept,” said organizer Frances Koury. “To think that it is still being offered free to the public, which is almost unheard of in any community, is a tribute to the dedication of our sponsors and friends of the arts.”
