Manchester mauls Porters Chapel

Friday’s homecoming game at Porters Chapel had all of the big trappings: a parade, a live webcast from the Russ Robinson’s Friday Night Under the Lights and a big performance from running back Kawayne Gaston.

But Gaston’s 214-yard, two touchdown effort couldn’t undo 15 penalties and three turnovers in a 42-15 thrashing by Manchester Academy.

Nine of those came in the first half, when the Eagle offense couldn’t match the stellar efforts of the defense, which stymied Manchester for most of the first half.

“They’re a good team and we knew what they were going to do,” PCA coach Wade Patrick said. “Our big deal was all of the penalties. You can’t do that against a good team, putting yourself in negative situations.”

The Eagles got their first possession when Talbot Buys stripped Demarcus Mahone of the ball and Josh Masterson fell on it at the Manchester 35. But the Eagles went backwards and turned it over on downs.

Manchester’s offense finally got into gear when Ben Fouche reeled off a 53-yard run. Six plays later on the first play of the second quarter, Russ Allen rumbled in from 7 yards out to put Manchester up 7-0 after Josh Peaster’s PAT.
