Akers 3rd girl with city ties to be homecoming queen

A third girl with Vicksburg ties has been named homecoming queen at the collegiate level.

Fenly Akers, a senior at Mississippi State University, will be crowned Saturday during the Starkville school’s home game against Tennessee-Martin.

Also, Meredith Edney, the daughter of Dr. Daniel and Lori Edney of Vicksburg, was elected a senior class representative to Samford University’s homecoming court. Meredith is an elementary education major at the Birmingham school.

Fenly is studying public relations. She is the daughter of Tom and Lynda Akers of Vicksburg.

In 2008, she was an MSU homecoming court freshman maid.

Fenly is a dean’s list scholar, an MSU alumni delegate, vice president of Delta Gamma sorority and a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America and the Southern Public Relations Federation.

She is a 2008 Warren Central High School graduate and has competed in the Miss Mississippi Pageant three times, being named to the top 10 in 2009, fourth runner-up in 2010 and second runner-up this year. She was crowned Miss Vicksburg’s Outstanding Teen in 2007.

Ole Miss’ homecoming queen is senior Maggie Martha Day, the daughter of former Vicksburg resident Bill Day. Hinds Community College’s homecoming queen is sophomore Rocio Aguilera, the daughter of Antonio Aguilera and Sandra Clark of Vicksburg.
