A two-hour manhunt that covered about five city blocks and involved at least eight police officers looking for a possible suspect in a rape reported a week ago on Drummond Street resulted in the arrest of a Vicksburg man on a charge of misdemeanor resisting arrest, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.

Stewart said today that police do not believe the man was connected to the rape reported Oct. 26 in the 2200 block of Drummond Street, two blocks from where he initially dodged police Tuesday.

Stewart said the man ran from police responding to a 12:30 p.m. call about a disturbance and a suspicious person in the area.

He said officer Shawn White initially attempted to stop the man as he came from between two houses on Drummond near Speed Street, but he fled into a wooded area near Letitia Street, about a block away. Stewart said the man later told officers he ran because he became scared when White called to him.

He said residents saw the man hiding in some bushes on Hunt Street about 2 p.m. and called police, who widened the search area before he was arrested. He was arrested by Police Chief Walter Armstrong at 2:20 p.m. at Washington and Harris streets and later released on $278 bond.

The chase came a week after a Vicksburg woman was raped and beaten in her home in the 2200 block of Drummond Street by a man who entered through a window of her home. Police said nothing was taken from the home and the woman did not know her attacker. Two men were initially held by police for questioning in the case, but were later released.

No charges have been filed, and Crime Stoppers has offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the woman’s assailant.
