FBC aims to help divorced survive holidays

Published 9:05 pm Friday, November 4, 2011

Holidays are hectic and can be difficult under the best conditions, but for the newly separated or divorced, Thanksgiving and Christmas can be especially painful.

DivorceCare, a Bible-based support group sponsored by First Baptist Church, wants to help.

Surviving the Holidays, a DivorceCare seminar, will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mafan Building, 1315 Adams St., to offer encouragement, practical tips, a listening ear and a chance to share challenges and concerns.

“This is the third year we have offered this seminar,” said Kevin Hurt, minister of discipleship and missions for First Baptist.

“We’ve had a very positive response of people who have been helped in the past.”

November is the time people begin to prepare for Thanksgiving and Christmas, Hurt noted, and for those who are newly single, decorating the home, establishing new traditions, managing finances and helping children navigate shared custody can be daunting.

Surviving the Holidays includes a 40-minute video presentation featuring noted Christian speakers, including Kay Arthur and H. Norman Wright, and a chance to speak with others in the group about how they are dealing with the breakup as the holidays approach.
