Robert Winston Dunaway

WELLSVILLE, Kan. — Robert Winston “Coach Bob” Dunaway passed away on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at the age of 83. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at Wellsville Baptist Church. Burial of cremains will follow at Wellsville Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Wellsville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 555, Wellsville, KS 66092.
He was the son of Jabus B. Dunaway and Emma Boyd Dunaway of Anguilla, Miss.
After high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1946 to 1948. His education included a B.S. degree in education from Mississippi College, and a Masters’ degrees in education and physical education from University of Southern Mississippi. He also had done work on his doctorate.
Coach Dunaway was involved in athletics and teaching for 28 years in numerous schools in Mississippi. He was president of Mississippi Coaches Association during this time. He still holds the honor of being one of Mississippi’s most successful high school coaches.
After retiring from coaching, he was instrumental in establishing a Christian school in Hattiesburg, Miss., and was the school’s first principal. In 1985 he went to work for Old Time Gospel Hour until being forced to retire by Parkinson’s disease.
Bob was a devoted Christian, Sunday school teacher and lay minister.
He is survived by daughters, Emma Shows (Robert) of Helena, Ala. and Eva Kolosiek of Wellman, Iowa; son, Brian Dunaway (Amanda) of Wellsville, Troy Dunaway (Kim) of Charlottesville, Va., and Shawn Shay of Wellsville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces, Debbie Foley and Trish Fedrick; and brother, Von B. Dunaway of Jackson, Miss.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Hallie Walker Dunaway; his parents; 11 siblings; and one nephew, Hank Walker.
