Sales of coin sets featuring Vicksburg National Military Park reached 7,861 units since the U.S. Mint began sales last week.
The 5-ounce uncirculated coin moved at a slower rate in its first week compared to its predecessor in the America the Beautiful series, the Olympic National Park quarter, the mint reported Wednesday. The ONP quarter sold 8,662 when it debuted last summer.
The Vicksburg coin depicts the U.S.S. Cairo on the Yazoo River as it likely appeared when it was a Union gunboat during the Civil War. The unblemished version sells for $204.95, as do uncirculated 2011 coins for Olympia, Gettysburg National Military Park and Glacier National Park.
As of Tuesday, 14,090 three-coin sets of VNMP quarters had sold, the mint reported. Vicksburg’s coin was one of three 2011-dated in the series that appeared last year, but was held out for coin collectors until 2012. The 2011 had a mintage of 35,000.
A quarter for the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, in Oklahoma, will launch Feb. 9.
