With its hitters struggling, Ole Miss needed a big-time performance on the mound to win its weekend series against Miami (Ohio).

It got it.

Sophomore right-hander Mike Mayers scattered four hits and a walk over seven innings, struck out five, and didn’t allow a runner past first base as the Rebels beat Miami 2-1 on Sunday in the series finale.

Dylan Chavez and Brett Huber finished up with an inning of relief apiece. Huber gave up a run and three hits in the ninth inning, but worked his way out of a two-on, no-out jam to earn his fourth save of the season.

“Obviously, today was more about pitching and defense,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “Chavez, Mayers and Huber all pitched well. They were able to break through and get some hits off Huber, but he hung in there and was able to make some pitches and get out of a jam.”

Jake Overbey drove in Ole Miss’ first run with an RBI single in the second inning, and Alex Yarbrough scored on Andrew Mistone’s sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it 2-0.

Miami started the ninth with three consecutive singles, the last of which was by Bryce Redeker and brought in Matt Honchel to cut it to 2-1. Huber then retired the last three batters to end the game. One of them, Alex Johnson, was retired when Mistone made a diving catch of a line drive toward third base for the second out.

LSU 5, Dartmouth 4

Tyler Hanover delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to give LSU (10-2) a win over Dartmouth (0-3), and a series sweep. LSU won its fifth straight game overall.

The winning rally started when Austin Nola singled with two outs. Hanover followed with a fly ball into right center. Dartmouth center fielder Jake Carlson was battling the sun the whole way, and the ball caromed off his glove. Nola zipped around from first base to give LSU the walk-off victory.

It was Hanover’s only hit of the game, although he did drive in another run with a ground out in the third inning. Nola and Raph Rhymes had four hits apiece for LSU. Rhymes also had two RBIs and scored two runs, while Nola had one RBI and scored once. LSU’s Nos. 2 through 5 hitters had 11 of the team’s 13 hits.

Delta State 5, Ala.-Huntsville 1

Aaron Newcomb had 12 strikeouts, and allowed only five hits and a walk in a complete game to lead Delta State past Alabama-Huntsville (8-12, 1-2 Gulf South Conference).

Jonathan Andrews went 2-for-4 and scored two runs for Delta State (10-2, 2-1), which took two out of three in the first GSC series of the season for both teams.

Tulane 7, Alabama 2

Nick Schneeberger belted a grand slam in the seventh inning, and Tulane (10-2) went on to beat Alabama (5-6) for the second time in three games.

Schneeberger finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored, and former Vicksburg High star Bowen Woodson was 2-for-4 with a run scored for Tulane. Ben Moore and Brett Booth had two hits apiece for Alabama.
