ACCS takes down Porters Chapel, 12-0

In the course of a long season, teams sometimes have to view the big picture.

After taking a big loss to Adams Christian on Monday, that’s how the Porters Chapel Eagles are looking at it, anyway.

ACCS took advantage of five PCA errors, feasted on three of its youngest pitchers and shut down the Eagles with its own ace in a 12-0 game shortened to four innings by the mercy rule.

It was the first of four games for PCA this week, a slate that includes a district doubleheader with Veritas today at 4 p.m. With that busy schedule, coach Wade Patrick said he was willing to sacrifice some short-term gains to give his team the best chance to win the more important district contests.

Freshman Zac Morgan started on the mound for PCA, and was followed by seventh-grader Colton Norris and eighth-grader Booth Buys.

“You have to. You have to get those guys some work. You just hate that it comes against a team that returns seven or eight starters,” Patrick said. “The district games come first. Plus, with four games this week, you’re going to be taxed on pitching anyway. You run those young guys out there and hope we can make enough plays behind them.”

On Monday, the Eagles (2-2) certainly didn’t do that. Their errors helped ACCS score five runs in the second inning and six in the third. Lester Wells and Wade Simpson each had a double for ACCS, which only totaled six hits.

Pearl River Community College signee Jake Brumfield was dominant on the mound for ACCS. He allowed only one hit — a third-inning single to Buys — walked one, hit a batter and struck out 11 in four innings.
