Kendall Graveman kept Mississippi State’s weeklong foray into Louisiana from becoming a total loss.
The junior right-hander pitched Mississippi State’s first complete game of the season, and the Bulldogs took the finale of a three-game series from LSU 7-1 on Sunday.
The victory snapped Mississippi State’s (15-7, 1-2 Southeastern Conference) four-game losing streak. All of the losses came on the road against Louisiana teams — two against Southeastern Louisiana and two more against LSU (16-4, 2-1). The two losses to LSU were both by one run.
Graveman allowed 10 hits and didn’t strike anyone out, but only allowed three hits and one run. The Bulldogs did not commit an error behind him.
“We had 10 hits today, but they weren’t the timely hits we had in the first two games this weekend,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “I told our players after the game that our level of hitting is going to have to improve. You give credit to the opposing pitcher, but at some point we have to take it upon ourselves to generate offense and produce runs.”
The Bulldogs gave Graveman plenty of room to work during their first at-bat. Adam Frazier led off the game with a double, triggering a five-run explosion. MSU had five hits in the inning, including an RBI doubles by Hunter Renfroe, Demarcus Henderson and Wes Rea.
In the sixth inning, Henderson led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Frazier to make it 6-0. Rea homered in the eighth for Mississippi State’s final run.
LSU got its run in the bottom of the sixth when JaCoby Jones singled with one out and scored on a ground out by Ty Ross.
Murray St. 6, USM 4
Murray State (10-10) scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, and went on to beat Southern Miss (11-9) for the second time in three games.
Southern Miss relievers Cameron Giannini and Bradley Roney combined to give up three runs in two innings. Giannini also allowed two inherited runners to score in the seventh inning, but those were charged to starter Jake Drehoff. Paul Ritzheimer drove in two runs with a double during Murray State’s seventh-inning rally, then scored the tying run on a single Travis Isaak. Cody Larson later drove in Isaak with another single to give Murray State a 5-4 lead.
“Relief pitching is just not doing what it needs to do to win baseball games, and I’m not putting it all on them by any means,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said.
Mike Kozlowski had an RBI single in the ninth for Murray State’s final run.
Ashley Graeter, Mason Robbins and Ryan Ellis each had two hits for Southern Miss, which left 12 runners on base.
Coastal Carolina 7, Ala. -Birmingham 0
Former Porters Chapel Academy star Michael Busby took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but Coastal Carolina (13-6) snapped a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of that inning and went on to beat UAB (13-7).
Busby (1-1) struck out five, walked three and allowed three hits in 52⁄3 innings. He also hit three batters. He was charged for all four runs and took his first loss of the season.
