After bouncing back from Friday night’s tough loss at Clinton with a win over Lewisburg, Warren Central got bounced around by Madison Central in the final game of the Warren Central Tournament on Saturday.

Madison Central bashed eight extra-base hits, including three home runs, to smash the Vikings 10-0 in five innings at Viking Field. The loss concluded a string of four games in three days for WC.

At least there’s next week. Warren Central (11-6) twice plays Greenville-Weston, which lost to Vicksburg 8-1 Friday night to drop to 0-4 in the division, and then a rare Saturday off.

Two weeks ago,WC earned its its first victory over Madison Central in six years. In Saturday’s rematch, the Vikings fell victim to a hot-hitting Jaguars squad that seemed to hit everything in sight.

“I felt like we executed our basic plan on the mound, but Madison Central adjusted. They pulled off everything two weeks ago. Tonight, they were more disciplined. We got down by a good number of runs and that took us out of our running game.”

Alabama signee Zack Irwin ripped a solo home run in the first inning and followed it with a two-run shot in the third to hand the Jaguars a 5-0 lead. A double by Curt Chism and a walk to Isaac Glenn set up Austin Sanders’ three-run home run that put the game out of reach.

The Jaguars (13-3) finished off the run-rule affair in the fifth with doubles from Drew Broyles and John Morgan Berry, along with an RBI single from William Miller.

The Vikings’ offense was limited to two singles in the second inning, by Hunter Austin and Will Stegall. Cody Waddell popped up a bunt and Bill McRight popped up to short to keep the runners stranded on first and second.

Madison Central finished with 14 hits. Irwin, Berry and Sanders drove in three runs each.

WC 5, Lewisburg 2

Brandon Gates hit a solo home run and scored twice, and Chase Ladd held Lewisburg to one earned run in seven innings as the Vikings won the opener of a split doubleheader.

Gates went deep in the bottom of the first inning, then scored on a base hit by Hunter Austin in the third to tie the game at 2. Marcus Ragan, who was running for Austin, later scored on a single by Cody Waddell to give the Vikings the lead for good.

Ladd pitched a complete game and finished with nine strikeouts. He gave up six hits and didn’t walk a batter.

Travis Barnett, Will Stegall and Mason Jarabica had two hits apiece as WC avenged a loss to Lewisburg earlier this season.

“It was a good one for us,” Abraham said. “We had 10 or 12 hits, Chase (Ladd) pitched well and the defense was great.”
