Felon held in shooting at witness’ home

A Vicksburg man who is a convicted felon was being questioned today in a drive-by shooting that happened at the home of the only witness of a March 1 shooting.
Police were questioning Kevin Buck, 26, 20 Water Well Road, in a drive-by shooting at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday at the home of John Jones, 413 Ford Road, Chief Walter Armstrong said. Jones, who has said he heard the March 1 shooting but saw nothing, was the only person at home on the block when Terry Smith, 22, was shot. Buck was charged days later in that shooting.
“There again he (Jones) has no idea who committed these crimes and for what reason,” Armstrong said.
Several bullets also hit the home of Jones’ neighbor, Armstrong said. No one was injured in the shooting.
The drive-by is the third reported in Kings this year.
“It’s just been the grace of God that we haven’t had anyone killed,” Armstrong said.
Buck was arrested on a warrant for possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon Tuesday afternoon by Armstrong and Capt. Davey Barnette.
The officers were standing in front of Jones’ house, and Buck drove by in a truck matching the description of a vehicle Jones said he had seen in the area shortly before someone fired 24 bullets at his house, Armstrong said.
At 1:24 a.m. Sunday, Buck abandoned an Oldsmobile Cutlass and fled on foot from officers following a traffic stop by patrolman William King in the 4100 block of North Washington Street, police Capt. Bobby Stewart said. A .380-caliber pistol was found near the vehicle, and a .38-caliber Smith and Wesson pistol reported stolen from a car at Walmart on Sept. 28 was found in the car, Stewart said.
“Apparently when Buck jumped out, he dropped the .380 on the ground and left the .38 on the console,” Stewart said.
Buck was in the Issaquena County Jail this morning without bail because he is out on $15,000 bail for aggravated assault in the March 1 drive-by.
Buck is the uncle of 4-year-old Arkeevian Warfield who was struck in January by four bullets in a drive-by shooting at the Water Well home, which at the time was shared by 20 people. Police have said they do not believe the shootings are related.
“We desperately need to make an arrest in these two drive-bys,” Armstrong said.
A $2,500 reward is being offered by Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest in the January shooting case. Anyone with information on either case may call police at 601-636-2511. The number for Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers is 888-827-4637.
Buck was convicted of robbery and armed robbery in 2002, according to court records. He was arrested in April 2010 by Vicksburg police for sale of cocaine but has not been indicted. After that arrest Stewart said police believe Buck to be “a significant dealer in the Kings Community.”
