A Vicksburg man has been arrested in the January drive-by shooting into a Kings home that injured a 4-year-old boy, Vicksburg police Chief Walter Armstrong said this morning.

John Phillip Hart, 24, 1408 Sherman Ave., was being held without bond Thursday after his arrest overnight at 625 Hart Drive, the chief said. It was not clear who lives at the address where the arrest was made.

Hart was arrested by Vicksburg Sgt. Troy Kimble, officer L.J. Peters and sheriff’s deputies.

Hart is charged with aggravated assault, shooting into an occupied dwelling and 16 counts of attempted aggravated assault. His initial court appearance was set for this morning.

“We are certainly glad that we were able to make an arrest because we realized that it was a very dangerous situation,” Armstrong said.

Hart is accused of shooting 17 times into 20 Water Well Road on Jan. 6. After the shooting, police estimated 20 people were living in the mobile home. The family later said the number was 17, Armstrong said, and Hart is charged with attempted aggravated assault on each person inside the residence who was not injured.

Several bullets struck 4-year-old Arkeevian Warfield in the groin, knee and ankle as he was running through the home, toward his grandmother. He underwent surgery at University Medical Center in Jackson and was released on Jan. 9.

“Those type individuals who would perpetrate those types of crimes have no place in society,” Armstrong said.

Hart did not have the weapon used in the shooting when he was arrested, Armstrong said.

The motive for the shooting is not clear, and Hart was developed as a suspect through investigation, Armstrong said.

“This is an ongoing investigation and more arrests are pending,” Armstrong said.

The house at 20 Water Well Road has been an “active residence” for reports of drug activity and domestic violence, Armstrong said in January. Police have responded to the residence more than 100 times since 1996.

Anyone with additional information on the case may call police at 601-636-2511 or Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers at 888-827-4637. Information is also sought in a drive-by shooting Wednesday at 413 Ford Road. The drive-by is the third in Kings this year, Armstrong said.

“We still solicit support from that community,” Armstrong said.
