DELTA, La. — A Vicksburg man who “really enjoyed life” and “loved his dogs” was killed Saturday when he was struck by a train near The World, a restaurant and bar just off Interstate 20 at U.S. 80, about 2 1/2 miles west of Delta.

Mark Trevilion, 48, address unavailable, was killed on impact just before 3 p.m., said Neal Horath, chief investigator with the Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office. Deputy coroner Ray Thornton pronounced Trevilion dead at the scene from trauma, said Horath.

“Mark had a couple of dogs that he really loved,” said longtime family friend, Ronnie Hynum, of Port Gibson. “He liked having a good time. Mark just really enjoyed life.”

Trevilion also enjoyed riding motorcycles, Hynum said. “He rode whenever he could.”

Patrons at The World said Trevilion had been at the bar Saturday afternoon with a family member.

“Witnesses said he was trying to put a coin on the track as the train was approaching,” Horath said.

Following the accident, the Kansas City Southern freight train was halted, stopping train traffic for several hours west of Delta while officials from the railroad and federal inspectors questioned crew members and completed reports.

Officials on the scene would not comment, and KCS spokesman Doniele Carlson did not return a phone message or e-mail.

Trevilion’s niece, reached by phone Saturday night, said the family declined to comment.

Mark Trevilion grew up in Port Gibson and attended Chamberlain-Hunt Academy, said Hynum, and was employed by Dirt Works, Inc. of Vicksburg.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy; father and mother, Burnice and Mary Evelyn Trevilion; one brother, Tim Trevilion; one sister, Leah Ross; and other relatives.
