Rebels, Golden Eagles doused

PEARL — There were creative skits, lightning bolts that arced across the sky like skeletal electrical fingers and dousing rain.

A little bit of everything, but in the end, the game scheduled between Southern Miss and Ole Miss at Trustmark Park on Tuesday was postponed to a future date yet to be announced.

The loss of the game hurts Southern Miss (16-12) more, coming off a disappointing series loss at Rice last weekend. The Golden Eagles’ RPI is at 94th after disappointing losses to Murray State (RPI rank, 170th) and Nicholls State (RPI rank, 100th).

But as the hours dragged on and the rain showed no signs of letting up, both teams decided to call it a day and reschedule another game at Trustmark.

“It got to a point where Coach (Mike) Bianco and I thought it wasn’t worth it,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. “But it’s important we get it made up. Where we are and where we’ve put ourselves in our situation, we certainly need it.”

Southern Miss will host Alcorn State in a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park starting Thursday.

Ole Miss is coming off its biggest series win of the season over Florida last weekend, but the Rebels (20-8) will face another challenge with a three-game set at Kentucky, ranked 8th in the latest Baseball America college baseball poll.

LSU 10, Louisiana College 2

The Tigers got a decent warmup for their weekend series at Florida that starts Thursday with a win over Louisiana College at Alex Box Stadium.

The LSU offense racked up 14 hits. The Tigers (23-6, 6-3 SEC) were paced by three hits apiece by catcher Jordy Snikeris (a career high), centerfielder Jared Foster and first baseman Tyler Moore.

Brent Bonvillain (1-0) earned the victory for the Tigers after entering in the third inning. He went two innings, striking out two.
